Shaping Tomorrow’s Shopfloors — Insights from Blum Novotest’s Shyam BV
Shyam BV, Managing Director of Blum Novotest Measuring & Testing Technology Pvt. Ltd., shares how intelligent manufacturing, sustainability, and people-first leadership are redefining the machine tool industry.
What does “intelligent manufacturing” mean to you, and how is your organization contributing to this transformation?
Intelligent Manufacturing is a technology-driven approach that utilizes internet-connected machinery to monitor the production process. The goal of Intelligent Manufacturing is to identify opportunities for automation.
As an organization Blum Novotest, we are actively advancing Intelligent Manufacturing through integrated automation, real-time measurement, and data driven process.
- Digilog & Laser Based in Process Metrology -Blum‑Novotest’s DIGILOG technology combines digital and analog touch probing, delivering highly precise, high-speed metrology for CNC machine tools.
- Intelligent Automation with Software Tools – Workpieces are measured during processing, and results are used immediately to adjust upcoming operations—compensating for tool wear—thereby automating quality control.
- Logistics & Intralogistics Automation – Blum‑Novotest did not stop at machine-level automation; they improved their internal warehouse and production logistics with a fleet of MiR250 autonomous mobile robots (AMRs).

Can you share a recent breakthrough or initiative that helped empower your customers or channel partners in a significant way?
Blum-Novotest will be presenting the new LC54-DIGILOG, the most compact laser measuring system in the LaserControl DIGILOG series to date. Specially developed for tool measurement and monitoring in micro-machining, the system sets new standards in precision, compactness and process reliability.
LC54-Digilog offers the entire range of functions of the tried-and-tested DIGILOG laser measuring systems for tools in the 10 µm to 16 mm diameter range.
LC54-DIGILOG give users tangible benefits: Measurement and testing times have been reduced by up to 60 percent. At the same time, the system laser optics have been perfected for the requirements of microtools. An optimised beam shape and a 30 percent reduction in the focus diameter allow for absolute accuracy that surpasses all previous systems
How is your company embracing sustainability in machining – from materials to energy and lifecycle design?
Sustainability in manufacturing is now a priority. At Blum-Novotest, we are committed to driving sustainability through efficient resource utilization and reducing energy consumption. Our cutting-edge technologies ensure precise machining, reducing material waste and rework. Additionally, our systems support predictive maintenance, which minimizes unnecessary downtime and optimizes machine performance, contributing to a lower carbon footprint across the production process.
In industries using expensive or hard-to-machine materials like titanium and Inconel (medical implants, aerospace), accurate measurement inside the machining center avoids costly rework and material loss
What role are MSMEs and local suppliers playing in your machine tool ecosystem, and how are you enabling their growth?
MSME is considered as backbone of India’s manufacturing ecosystem, supplying essential components, tooling systems, and sub‐assemblies needed by machine tool manufacturers. They help sustain operations across Tier 1, Tier 2, and Tier 3 cities with cost‑effective and localized production.
SMEs adopt digital and advanced technologies, they enhance their efficiency, productivity, reduce costs, and align with global quality requirements—becoming dependable local suppliers.
Blum’s solutions align well with the national push for higher manufacturing productivity under initiatives like Make in India and AatmaNirbhar Bharat. Their focus on automation, IoT integration, zero-defect manufacturing, and reproducibility supports MSMEs striving to meet global-quality benchmarks while enhancing competitively
How do you see digital technologies (like AI, IoT, or digital twins) redefining machine tool applications in the next 3–5 years?
Digital technologies are rapidly reshaping the machine tool industry, transforming everything from design and manufacturing to service and customer engagement.
Industrial Internet of Things – Connects machines, sensors, tools, and systems to a network for real-time monitoring and data exchange. This leads to better energy and resource utilization.
Digital Twin Technology – Creates a real-time virtual model of a physical machine or process. It helps in enabling virtual testing, performance prediction, and fault diagnostics.
Talent is a core driver of future-ready manufacturing. How are your re-skilling or upskilling your workforce for the new era?
Blum Novotest is highly focused on workforce upskilling or reskilling.
Key Training & Upskilling Initiatives at Blum‑Novotest.
- Training & Qualification (T&Q) Program – Blum‑Novotest has a robust internal training initiative called Training & Qualification (T&Q). Launched at least three years ago, it delivers digital and in‑house training resources to both new and existing employees—covering topics like technical know‑how via video modules and self‑learning platforms in multiple languages.
- Workshops & Customer Training – We regularly organize BLUM Workshops at our Technology Centre or in collaboration with machine tool partners
What values or leadership principles guide your decision-making in balancing innovation, business growth, and social impact?
Balancing Innovation, Business growth and Social Impact is a mark of Sustainable and Future forward leadership.
Purpose-Driven Innovation for Shared Value – Lead by anchoring innovation and growth in a clear, long-term purpose that creates value not just for the business, but also for society and the environment.
