Building India’s Global Manufacturing Edge Through Technology, Quality and Continuous Innovation

Gautam Ahuja, CEO & Managing Director, Guhring India Pvt. Ltd., on driving productivity, innovation and sustainable growth through advanced tooling and customer-focused solutions.

  1. India aspires to become a global manufacturing hub. What are the biggest opportunities and challenges for the Indian machine tool industry in achieving global competitiveness, and what changes are still required?

The outlook for the Indian manufacturing industry is positive, supported by a skilled and educated young workforce that makes the nation a favourable destination for companies. The China + 1 strategy adopted by multinationals has helped India grow as an export powerhouse, with continuous investments, expansions, and new plants being set up.

However, achieving global competitiveness in the machine tool industry has got few notable hurdles. Major challenges include heavy reliance on imports for raw materials and energy sources, and the difficulty of setting up and maintaining stringent quality standards through consistent processes and SOPs. Furthermore, building a readily deployable skilled labour pool and upgrading critical infrastructure—such as reliable power and robust road networks—remain pressing concerns managed by governing agencies.

To bridge the gap and secure global leadership, critical changes are still required. India must heavily localize its raw material and energy supply chains to reduce operational vulnerabilities. Policymakers and industry leaders need to institutionalize large-scale technical training programs to resolve skill deficits, while manufacturers must rigorously adopt standardized operating procedures (SOPs). Finally, accelerating infrastructure development will lower logistics bottlenecks, ensuring seamless integration into global manufacturing supply chains.

  • Innovation today extends beyond products. How is your organisation driving innovation across manufacturing processes, customer experience, sustainability, workforce development or digital transformation?

Innovation has always been at the core of Guhring’s philosophy, with strong emphasis on research and development and the continuous adoption of advanced technologies. Guhring has a long history of pioneering innovation in the tooling industry. In 1980, it became the first company in the world to introduce coating technology for drills, demonstrating its commitment to developing solutions that improve machining performance.

Today, Guhring’s innovation extends across manufacturing, digital transformation, customer experience and sustainability. To support Industry 4.0 on the shop floor, Guhring provides automated tool storage and management solutions that improve efficiency and enable better control of tooling. The Guhring Tool Management System (GTMS) includes modules for quality management, production management and tool-life monitoring. By providing greater transparency of data, easy reporting and better planning of inventory and production, GTMS enables customers to make faster, more informed decisions and optimise their manufacturing processes.

Customer-focused innovation is also central to Guhring’s approach. Guhring possesses 600+ patents in cutting tools and coating sector. The company continuously develops innovative tool geometries, concepts and coating technologies designed to increase production output at the customer’s end. By improving tool performance, productivity and tool life, these solutions help customers optimize plant expenditure, improve operational efficiency and achieve significant cost savings.

PCD tools, HPC Milling cutters, RF 100 Speed end mills are some of the examples where customer achieves higher productivity through innovative tooling concepts.

Emerging manufacturing sectors like EV, Aerospace, Medical, Electronics demand advanced tooling solutions which Guhring has been providing.

Sustainability is another important area of innovation. Guhring offers carbide recycling to customers, helping recover valuable materials and reduce the consumption of natural resources.

Through continuous R&D, smart manufacturing, digitalization, customer-focused solutions and sustainable practices, Guhring is creating innovation that goes beyond products—delivering measurable improvements in productivity, efficiency, cost optimization and environmental responsibility across the manufacturing value chain.

  • Manufacturing success increasingly depends on collaboration across OEMs, suppliers, technology providers, academia and startups. How do you see partnerships shaping the future of manufacturing, and what role does your organisation play in this ecosystem?

Manufacturing is increasingly becoming an ecosystem-driven industry, where collaboration across OEMs, suppliers, technology providers, academia and startups is essential to drive innovation, productivity and competitiveness. At Guhring, we strongly believe that our role goes beyond simply supplying cutting tools. We strive to be a business partner to our customers by understanding their manufacturing challenges and providing tooling solutions that improve productivity, optimize processes and deliver greater savings.

Our focus is on building long-term relationships based on trust, technical collaboration and continuous improvement. By working closely with customers, we can identify opportunities to enhance machining performance, reduce cycle times, improve tool life and achieve cost efficiencies. This collaborative approach enables us to contribute directly to our customers’ manufacturing success.

We also believe that partnerships with academia are important for shaping the future workforce. Through guest lectures, plant tours and interactions with students, we help expose them to the latest production technologies and real-world manufacturing practices. This industry-academia connect helps students understand evolving manufacturing requirements and prepares them to become future-ready professionals.

Going forward, we see stronger partnerships as the foundation for a more innovative, sustainable and technology-driven manufacturing ecosystem. Our aim at Guhring is to remain a trusted technology and productivity partner, creating value for customers while contributing to the development of the next generation of manufacturing talent.

  • Looking ahead to 2030, what will define a successful machine tool company? Which capabilities, technologies or leadership qualities will differentiate the industry’s future leaders?

History proves that pioneers who fail to adapt and don’t innovate as per changing times become extinct. Looking ahead to 2030, a successful machine tool company will be defined by its agility in embracing this exact principle.

Future industry leaders will be differentiated by three core pillars:

  • Technologies: Integration of AI-driven automation and hybrid platforms in manufacturing / support processes.
  • Capabilities: The shift from merely selling standalone products to delivering connected, flexible production systems, and outcome-based solutions.
  • Leadership Qualities: Visionary leaders must foster a culture of constant innovation, rapid workforce reskilling, and demonstrate the strategic foresight to pivot quickly against supply chain volatility and environmental mandates.

Ultimately, survival and supremacy by 2030 belongs to companies that treat continuous technological evolution not as an option, but as their core operating DNA.

  • As one of the Machine Tool Influencers 2026, what message would you like to share with the next generation of manufacturing professionals and entrepreneurs who will shape India’s industrial future?

As India steps into a vibrant industrial era, the upcoming generation of manufacturing professionals and entrepreneurs hold the key to our collective success.

My message and request to the next generation would be:

Lay emphasis on technology and quality. Clearly define the processes and have trust in them without losing patience. Sustainable growth requires disciplined execution and steady resilience.

Furthermore, remember that customer service and connect are of utmost importance for building lasting partnerships and global trust.

To truly stand out, be inquisitive, be eager to learn and implement latest technologies. Embrace continuous innovation, maintain uncompromising standards, and let adaptability guide your vision as you build a self-reliant, future-ready industrial ecosystem for the nation.
