EV Phone Home

There is so much talk about electric vehicles (EVs) that it seems like we have made contact with aliens. And they’ve turned out to be friendly people. Or some other friendly species we have not named yet.

ChatGPT is the other development the world is super excited about. There is no doubt that both are amazing technologies, and both are going to have a transformational effect on all industries, including manufacturing.

I’ve personally used ChatGPT. It truly is astonishing. But what I am discovering is that its real power is unlocked when we know how to use it right.

The same thing, I am discovering through my talks with industry influences, is true for EV technology. Its real power lies in how people, societies, and economies are putting it to use. Or plan to do it down the road.

I’ve spoken before about how I’ve seen EVs transforming our smaller cities. I will say it again because it’s truly amazing. Here’s how it’s making a difference: Traditionally, there has been a lack of economically and sustainably viable and efficient shared transportation options for commuting in most of our cities. Most rely on ramshackle, fuel-guzzling, smoke- and soot-bellowing 3-wheelers, or inhumane “human-powered” cycle tri-rikshaws.

All this is changing, and in some cities where I have traveled in the recent few years, this is changing fast.

A lot of owners, drivers, and pullers of these 3-wheelers and cycle-rikshaws have switched to battery-run vehicles. My claim is based on my conversations with numerous people who either drive or own these vehicles, as well as my experiences and observations during my visits over the past three years. This has enormous implications for the cities’ economies as well as their natural environment.

This issue’s cover story takes this conversation forward to cover a host of areas crucial to the adoption of electric vehicles. Aspects like battery technology, safety, and charging infrastructure are key determinants of how we can best harness the EV revolution that is sweeping the world.

Stay Safe. Stay resolute.
