Sathiya Narayanan S, VP – Operations, LMW Limited – Machine Tool Division, explores how AI, IoT, digital technologies and skilled talent are transforming the future of machining.
From Smart Machines to Smarter Decisions: The Future of Manufacturing
- What does “intelligent manufacturing” mean to you, and how is your organization contributing to this transformation?
From LMW’s perspective, intelligent manufacturing is the integration of advanced machine tool technology, automation, digital connectivity, and data-driven decision making to create highly productive, flexible, and sustainable manufacturing environments. It is not merely about automating individual processes, but about enabling machines, people, and systems to work together seamlessly, resulting in improved productivity, higher quality, reduced downtime, faster response to customer needs, and optimized resource utilization.
At LMW Machine Tool Division, we are actively contributing to this transformation by embedding digital and smart manufacturing capabilities into our products and operations. Our CNC machines are being developed with enhanced connectivity, remote monitoring, predictive maintenance capabilities, production data collection, and integration with factory-level systems. We are also investing in automation solutions such as robotic loading and unloading, pallet systems, flexible automation, and digital process optimization to help customers improve operational efficiency and address workforce challenges.
we aim to enable Indian manufacturers to transition from conventional production methods to intelligent, connected, and globally competitive manufacturing ecosystems. Our vision is to make smart manufacturing practical, scalable, and accessible, thereby supporting the growth of India’s advanced manufacturing sector.
- Can you share a recent breakthrough or initiative that helped empower your customers or channel partners in a significant way?
At LMW, we have been driving digital transformation through connected machine solutions, remote diagnostics, machine health monitoring, and faster service support, helping customers improve machine uptime and productivity. In parallel, our shop floor Business Process Re-engineering (BPR) initiatives leverage real-time production monitoring, data analytics, and digital workflows to enhance operational efficiency and decision-making. We have also strengthened our product portfolio by introducing advanced CNC technologies, automation-ready machines, and high-precision manufacturing solutions to address the evolving needs of industries such as automotive, aerospace, EV, and precision engineering. Together, these initiatives are helping our customers and our partners adopt intelligent manufacturing, improve competitiveness, and achieve sustainable growth.
- How is your company embracing sustainability in machining – from materials to energy and lifecycle design?
At LMW, sustainability is integrated into every stage of our business, from product design and manufacturing to customer application. Our manufacturing facilities operate predominantly on green power, significantly reducing our carbon footprint, while our foundry’s GreenCo certification reflects our commitment to sustainable manufacturing practices and responsible resource utilization. We focus on energy-efficient design principles, optimizing machine structures, drives, and processes to minimize energy consumption throughout the product lifecycle. Within our factories, we continuously improve energy management, material utilization, waste reduction, and operational efficiency through lean and digital manufacturing practices. By combining sustainable manufacturing processes with energy-efficient machine tool solutions, LMW is committed to delivering greater value to customers while contributing to a greener and more sustainable manufacturing ecosystem.
- What role are MSMEs playing in your machine tool ecosystem, and how are you enabling their growth?
MSMEs play a vital role in LMW’s machine tool ecosystem, both as valued customers and as key partners in our supply chain. A large number of MSMEs depend on LMW’s machine tools, automation solutions, and manufacturing expertise to enhance their productivity, quality, and competitiveness. We actively support their growth by providing access to advanced manufacturing technologies, application engineering support, process optimization, training, and turnkey solutions that enable them to move up the value chain and cater to more demanding industries. At the same time, MSMEs form a significant part of our supplier network, contributing critical components, assemblies, and services to our manufacturing operations. Through long-term partnerships, technical guidance, capability development, quality improvement initiatives, and collaborative growth programs, LMW helps strengthen the MSME ecosystem, creating a mutually beneficial value chain that drives innovation, localization, and sustainable industrial growth.
- How do you see digital technologies (like AI, IoT, or digital twins) redefining machine tool applications in the next 3–5 years?
Over the next 3 to 5 years, AI, IoT, and digital twins will transform machine tools into intelligent, connected systems capable of self-monitoring, predictive maintenance, real-time process optimization, and improved quality control. Digital technologies will provide manufacturers with greater visibility of machine performance, energy consumption, and production efficiency, enabling faster and better decisions on the shop floor. At LMW, we are actively advancing connected machine solutions, digital services, and smart manufacturing technologies to help customers improve productivity, reduce downtime, and accelerate their Industry 4.0 journey.
- Talent is a core driver of future-ready manufacturing. How are you re-skilling or upskilling your workforce for the new era?
At LMW, we strongly believe that the future of manufacturing depends on developing talent from within. We focus on honing our workforce through continuous in-house learning, structured technical training, mentorship from experienced engineers, cross-functional exposure, and hands-on involvement in new product development, automation, and digital transformation projects. Our employees are regularly trained on advanced CNC technologies, smart manufacturing practices, quality systems, and emerging digital tools, enabling them to grow alongside evolving industry requirements. By creating a culture of continuous learning and knowledge sharing, we not only build technical expertise but also nurture leadership, innovation, and problem-solving capabilities, ensuring that our workforce remains future-ready and capable of driving LMW’s growth in the era of intelligent manufacturing.
- What values or leadership principles guide your decision-making in balancing innovation, business growth, and social impact?
At LMW, our decision-making is guided by the principles of customer value, continuous innovation, integrity, people development, and sustainable growth. We believe that innovation must solve real customer challenges and create long-term value, while business growth should be achieved responsibly and ethically.
